Employees engaged in simple service work in a dependent position, such as cashiers at supermarkets, hospital cleaners, and delivery truck drivers, have a position that is not much different from that of wage laborers, the physical laborers of yesterday, who preceded them, in terms of their status.
However, they now account for a quarter or more of the labor force. They already outnumber physical laborers in factories. _Their status, productivity, and dignity are the central social issues in post-capitalist society._
On the other hand, the position of knowledge workers, the other major stratum in post-capitalist society, is completely different.
Knowledge workers can only work if there is an organization. In this respect, they are dependent.
However, they own the means of production called "knowledge". These knowledge workers account for a third or more of the labor force in all advanced countries today.
